She was born in 1820 into a rich British family. Her dad (William Nightingale) took care
of her education. He was a landowner and taught her many different languages. Her
mum (Fanny Nightingale) on the other hand was a bossy woman who was thoroughly
concerned in Florence getting a husband.
At the age of 17 Florence strongly believed she got a call from god to help others. At
the age of 25 she announced to her parents she wanted to become a nurse. Her parents
were completly opposed to the idea because nursing was working class women. Her
parents and sister (Parthenope Nightingale) tried many things to stop her wanting a
career in medicine. Her sister faked fainting spells and her mother accused her of being
evil.
Florence denied to marry several men because she believed marriage would interfere in
her work. She was reinforced in medicine when she met Elizabeth Blackwell, first doctor
(her ambition). Elizabeth encouraged her to keep going.
At the age of 31 her father finally allowed Florence to become a nurse.
The Crimean War had come and soldiers were dieing like flies. Florence and 38 other
nurses all came to help. At first they were not aloud to aid the wounded soldiers as the
male doctors were in charge but as more broke down they were in need of there help.
The death rate dropped 2 percent and the soldiers were very grateful.
When Florence arrived back in London the crowd claimed her as a heroine. She went
back and caught all the diseases that could offer. After all the diseases went she lossed
all her hair , becme very skinny and became to blind to read a newspaper. But still refused
to stop working. Working until the point of exhaustion, everyone thought this would be the
end but still remained alive for another few years. On August Florence fell into a deep sleep
and never awoke again.
